Let us get straight to the point. Very few ( if any at all) had Porto down to beat the footballing powerhouse that is Bayern Munich. The German champions boasted a fine record throughout the group stages, dismantling opposition along the way, though Porto proved to be a stern opposition tonight. However Barcelona’s victory was also a surprise of sorts , as we will go on to see, but first to the Porto game.
10 minutes in and Porto were up 2-0. A penalty and a cool finish, both from Ricardo Queresma. The home fans were ecstatic, Bayern stunned. Thiago pulled one back and many expected that to be the start of the comeback, however it wasn’t to be and Porto grabbed a third through Jackson Martinez in the second half. Porto stuck to their game plan and it worked, setting themselves up for a very interesting second leg tie in Germany.
Barcelona’s victory against Paris st Germain was somewhat an upset. The Catalan side had failed to win on French soil since defeating Lyon in 2001. A stat that could have eased the mind of the French side, but it shouldn’t have.
Lionel Messi hit the outside of the post with a wonderful curling effort early in the first half. It was a sign of things to come for Barcelona, as they carved out chance after chance before finally finding the breakthrough.
Neymar raced through to finish off a neat Barcelona move, tucking the ball into the corner. The Catalan side added their second and third late in the second half, with David Luiz (who replaced the injured Thiago Silva) at fault for both goals, allowing Luis Suarez to nutmeg him on both occasions.
The always energetic Suarez nutmeged Luiz after cutting in from the right hand side and finished,albeit Sirigu should have done better after getting a hand to the ball. Ten minutes later Suarez showed hos class yet again nutmegging the Brazilian defender before this time giving Sirigu no chance, finishing brilliantly, firing the ball into the roof of the net. The hosts grabbed a lifeline through a deflected effort but it is hard to see a way back for the French side, with it all to do in the second leg .

Hi, great bit of journalism. I agree with the majority of points raised, agreeing that it came as a surprise to me slightly that Barcelona were able to beat PSG so easily, though it must be remembered that it was a PSG side minus Ibrahimovic, who so often carries the team with his goals and playmaking ability, as well as missing a few first-team regulars in midfield.
Regarding the Porto-Bayern game, I think that people underestimated Porto’s chances in that game. They have acquired a very promising team, with a mix of experienced players in the likes of Martínez and Helton, young talents in Danilo and Casemiro, the maverick Quaresma and of course, Gary Cahill and Ángel Di María’s lovechild, Héctor Herrera. That, coupled with Bayern missing the likes of Ribery and Robben and myself having won a lot of money betting on Porto in that game meant that I didn’t see the win as too much of a surprise.
But I think what the readers are really aching to find out is who is the man behind the keyboard? Who is this ‘dannyvars’?
